Before the University of Ibadan minimum stipulated 3.5 cgpa for one to be involved in politics as a student, the institution had produced thousands of Dino Melaye who contributed into the collapse of the students union, destabilization of the institution calendar, perpetration of cult activities and waste of innocent lives on campus whilst hiding under aluta continua victoria aserta for their selfiah gain and till date, many of them are contributing to political destruction in Nigeria.
Let me use myself as an example: after my 100level,I was on 3.3cgpa and was not allowed to participate in faculty politics because the university stipulated only minimum 3.5cgpa. I was also screened out by the students affairs division from participating in my hostel politics but on recommendation of the warden, I was given an approval based on my service to the hall which was known by all and sundry. At the end ofy 200level I rose to 4.5cgpa which allowed me to participate actively in politics in the University of Ibadan.
Not just me but many others like Alagbe gbemileke, osho Elijah,Ige babatunde,Plato bamidele,Adeola labzy,Tunde rufai, ajisafe akinkunmi,Lawrence, olayiwola Ibrahim,EdetIyambaGeneral, gbadeyanka Ibrahim, aloyinlapa semiu, damilare raimi and many more who were actively in politics with first class, 2.1 and minimum 2.2. These sets of students have also being doing well in their various chosen field.
All the University did was to establish balance between politics and academics putting into consideration character and sound judgement.
I believe this should be a template for our Nation Nigeria so as to curb the desperation for political looting instead of Nation building. In fact, the school certificate minimum requirement in the constitution should be revisited. There should be need for further aspiration for knowledge and should be enshrined in the constitution.
Politics is not business but a call to national service, building and development.
