Its expedient that graduates are tested academically, medically and practically before given an employment even if its family or business tie recommendation to know the ability and capability of such graduate.
In 2012, i was recommeñded for an employment in a consulting firm in lagos and till date the interview and test( both academically and personality assessment), including medical test, are a reference point of the pride of my ability to seek for job if need be ,had it been i end up not being an entrepreneur. A graduate must be able to defend his qualification. Technical work and entrepreneurship is good but it makes a lot of sense that graduates should learn under experienced people first before going to pride himself an entrepreneur. This brings dilligency, humility and worth.
I was impressed because the test was a surprise. I was called for an interview and on getting there I was presented with test papers. I think what i learned in this experience is that job seekers should not be told if they would end up writing test because if told, they end up reading as if they are still in the university. A graduate must be versatile and always prepared for uncertainty. I did pretty well in calculations and below average in English. I was shown my result and till date i appreciate it.
Why am i writting thia piece? Daily ,I am bothered by the fact that over the years,I had met graduates who really can not express themselves both in spoken and written expression. I have seen graduates who are appalling to that word graduate. I am not saying everyone should be a university graduate but everybody should know how to read and write. Funny enough, in Nigeria, many University graduate do not know how to read and write. Even in petty business and trade as an artesan, you must know how to read and write appropriately.
Nigeria has a long way to go because many of these inappropriate people end up in government and that's why a whole lot of people in government today are lacking in credibility when compare to many business executives and entrepreneur that pay taxes to the government. A government that's insensitive and lacks knowledge of the multiplier effect of its action.
In all these, institutional compromise is the conduit of educational decay in Nigeria. From primary to secondary and to higher institution.
Every child starts exhibiting chosen characteristics from age three. Why should parent be doing their assignment for them? Why should parent make their wards jump class? Why would parent not allow their ward repeat a class if he or she is not fit to move up the ladder? Why should parent pay for special centers? Why should higher institution admit underage? Why should higher institution embrace religious, tribal and nepotism in in admission process? Why should lecturers turn hand out to business? Why won't lecturers be assessed by students? So many questions that can create clue to our educational damage in Nigeria.
Education is a legacy and no form of sematics and rhetorics should be encouraged in discouraging it. An educated mind is is free and liberated.
Knowledge is power.
God bless Nigeria.
